The Orlando Police Department is seeking to add two rooftop drone docking stations to an office building near Lake Nona Town Center as part of its Drone as First Responder program, according to WESH 2, which reports that the Orlando City Council was scheduled to consider a licensing agreement with the building’s owner, LNT Office V LLC. The drones would launch from the rooftop in response to specific 911 calls, giving officers aerial views and live video from incident scenes. OPD said the drones will not be used for random patrols or widespread surveillance. “DFR drones are located in fixed docking stations, remaining powered and prepared at all times,” the department said, explaining that they fly directly to incidents using GPS coordinates and stream live video to FAA-licensed officers in OPD’s Crime Center. OPD said in a Facebook video that the drones can arrive at active scenes “almost instantaneously.”
