Magic Gaming, the Orlando-based NBA team’s e-sports arm, hosted its first official open-to-the-public event since moving to its new leAD Lake Nona Sports & Health Accelerator home.
The multi-year partnership between the Orlando Magic, Magic Gaming and leAD Lake Nona was announced earlier this year.
On June 11th, the e-sports team faced off against Hornets Venom GT in TIPOFF group play. Fans cheered on their teams and, in the end, Magic conceded to the opposition in a heartbreaking 61-60 loss. The team erased an 8-point deficit in under three minutes in the fourth quarter, but ultimately could not close the gap.
“It was definitely not the design we drew up. A little disheartening to not get the attempt,” said Magic Gaming General Manager and Head Coach Jonah Edwards after the game.
Two strengths for the Magic Gaming team included ball movement and ball protection. They had 18 assists, three more than the Hornets, and only had five turnovers. The Hornets made two more 3-point shots and out-rebounded them by four.
The in-person audience added to the atmosphere and encouraged the team with excitement and enthusiasm. “It was awesome having everybody come out and show support for Magic Gaming,” said Edwards. “We love it … in Lake Nona. We’re thrilled to be here and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
As the Magic Gaming season continues with more 5v5 and 3v3 action, leAD Lake Nona is excited to host more events like this one. Basketball fans from all over Central Florida will find something to cheer for at these exciting e-gaming matchups. Find upcoming home games HERE.
