Nurses at UCF Lake Nona Hospital helped create Nurse Handoff, an AI-powered tool that expanded to 15 more Florida hospitals in September, according to South Florida Hospital News and Healthcare Report. The tool was developed with frontline nurses and Google Cloud at HCA Healthcare’s first Innovation Hub, located at UCF Lake Nona Hospital. During shift changes, it pulls key details from a patient’s electronic health record, including notes, orders and test results, into a short report the incoming nurse can review on a secure mobile device. Nurses stay in control of the handoff and all clinical decisions. Pilot participants overwhelmingly rated the tool as factual and helpful, and new graduate nurses said it made them feel more supported and prepared. “Our nurses brought a real-world challenge from the bedside and worked side by side with technology teams to develop and refine a solution with the potential to support nurses and patients far beyond our hospital,” said Wendy Brandon, CEO of UCF Lake Nona Hospital, who presented the tool at the State of Medical City expo in Lake Nona. The article notes that nurse handoffs happen about 24 million times a year across HCA Healthcare hospitals.
